Almond Timeline

Bloom/Pollination

February-March

This is the most critical time in an almonds timeline. The trees are in full bloom with millions of pink and white blossoms. The success of this period will be essential for a productive crop with growers and buyers hoping for optimal temperatures and bee flying hours. Weather is a big factor at this time of the year.

Maturing

April-July

Pollinated almonds start to form young nuts. Bright green leaves appear as temperatures continue to increase and nuts start to set on trees. The biggest risk factor at this time of the year is a late season freeze.

Cracking

July-August

Inside the hull the almond shell and kernel take shape. As the nut matures it dried and the hull splits exposing the nearly mature almond. Close monitoring of orchard pests is taking place as the almonds are almost completely formed they are susceptible to insect damage.

Harvest

August-October

The second most important time for the almond industry. Nuts have been shaken off trees and loaded into bins ready to be moved to the huller. From here almond kernels go to the processing plant.

Dormant

November-January

Orchards are cleaned taking care of insect damage and old orchard are removed ready to go all over again in February. Growers will be praying for rain during this period to ensure there is enough water to irrigate during bloom and avoid any drought risk.
